A heartwarming story about a doll named Constance who is stolen during the Great Depression, and the adventures she has with the homeless little girl named Sarah who stole her. Sarah travels with a group of hobos, riding freight trains all over America in search of work, and it is a very different life than Constance had in the mansion in Philadelphia where she used to live. The Christmas Gift is a story of separation, love, and the true meaning of Christmas toys.

The Christmas Gift - A Wonderful Gem!

Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Author: John McDonnell
Format: Kindle

As Constance sat at the beautifully appointed holiday table, she once again found herself the center of the neighborhood girls' attention. Of course, being the most attractive and coveted doll in the house, this was a familiar position. Enjoying her perch, a sudden commotion in the kitchen pulled her mistress away. Moments later her mistress returned with a filthy street urchin in tow. Suddenly, Constance found herself handed over to the young girl who mercilessly pawed at her with her grubby hands. Just when Constance thought it could not get any worse, her life changed forever.

John McDonnell's detailed and wonderfully textured descriptions of early twentieth century life, rich characterizations, and juxtaposition of the wealthy versus the destitute vagabonds engrosses the reader into a portrait of depression era America. Hopping the rails, working for food, and finding happiness in life's simple pleasures transport one to a harder but in some ways simpler time.

"The Christmas Gift" tugged at my heartstrings evoking a number of emotions. Its simple yet touching messages lingered with me long after finishing the final pages. This and a wonderful feeling of nostalgia it induced are what prompted me to give this five stars. I really enjoyed this short story. "The Christmas Gift" is $4.99 on Kindle.

The Christmas Gift edition by John McDonnell Children eBooks Reviews

The Christmas Gift is a well written story that sweeps you away to a time long ago. The writer captures the feeling of a hungry, homeless little girl named Sarah who is in need of a little TLC. The story of inner beauty is heartwarming and the ending brings a smile to your face. This would be a great book for a mother/daughter book club.
The perfect short read at the end of a long day!
This story wasn't necessarily bad.. Just felt like something I have heard before. I love the message inside and the fact that although there was a happy ending, it had its fair share of downs before it got there
'The Christmas Gift' is (surprisingly, I know) a short story about Christmas and the power of love. It focuses on the connection that little girls have with their dolls. I thought it was a pretty sweet Christmas story. It's fairly predictable in plot and theme, but it has heart, and I could picture parents reading it to their little girls as a yearly Christmas tale.

There was a lot of power of imagination at work with Constance the doll being able to think and feel. Normally I would want some reason for this, but in a short story I can excuse it and have fun just appreciating the emotion behind the story. Overall, definitely a cute Christmas story.
A delightful offering for a traditional Christmas short story. What I loved was how well the author created his world and characters, with a deft touch, not too little, not too much. Also, it has a great message for all of us, young and old, so well done that I never noticed the "message" while reading it, but afterwards it added to the overall satisfaction of the read. Added to my list of favorite Christmas stories.

The only reason for the four instead of five stars was that I felt the story needed one more edit run through as there were a couple of places where I got bumped out of the story.

This story was given to me for review.
In our house, for the three weeks before Christmas, we have a tradition where we light the fire and read for 30 minutes before we go to bed. The books that we like the best are The Polar Express, The Little Match Girl, a Kid's version of A Christmas Carol and Dr. Suess's How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The Christmas Gift will now join our collection. This book is incredibly sweet and rich in texture and emotion and it is just the perfect "by the fire, Christmas Story". The book is essentially the story of a girl and a doll but it is set during the Depression and something about the hardships that the main characters experience rings familiar in today's economy.

This book reminded me a little of The Velveteen Rabbit and a little of The Polar Express and captures your imagination in much the way that these two books do. Add it to your holiday collection of books. It is a good one.
Constance was the prettiest doll in Miss Emily Hawthorne's big Philadelphia house. Every Christmas the now grown up Emily had some little girls over for a tea party and it was the only time she got her dolls down out of their cupboard. Constance, as the prettiest, always had the place of honor.

Christmas 1937 was different though. Emily's housekeeper caught a little girl named Sarah who had snuck into the kitchen and was stealing food. The poor little girl was dirty and obviously starving, so Emily invited her to sit at the table with the other little girls and share tea. When the party was over and Emily was distracted seeing the little girls to the door Sarah rushes off with Constance, leaving her own beat up Raggedy Ann doll behind. Constance goes on a cross country adventure with Sarah and learns many things about life and herself.

I love that this short story is told from the viewpoint of Constance. It's well-written with a tight plot and well-developed characters. I like the writing style, so I'm off to see what else McDonnell has out there.
